Come follow us on our journey from 1979 to today!
IN THE BEGINNING
In 1979, Hanschell Inniss Harrisons better known as ‘HIH’ purchased a small meat cutting and packing plant. Initially only hamburger patties and pork sausages were being produced and staff then comprised of a meat cutter and a manager. In 1983 a decision was made to make a substantial investment into building a state-of-the-art meat and processing plant.
Farmer's Choice Born
For the expansion of the plant much guidance was obtained from Griffith Laboratories, Canada Packers and Schneiders of Canada. Consequently hams, bacon, wieners and sliced meats were added to the product range. That was when the Farmer’s Choice brand which has become a well known and loved household name in Barbados and the region was born.
With the birth of the Farmer’s Choice brand a separate company, H.I.H. Manufacturing Limited was formed to conduct the meat processing operations. In 1990, H.I.H Manufacturing Ltd. was merged with Barbados Packers and Canners Ltd., or ‘BARPAC’ a company established in 1976, which produced both frozen meats and canned meats. The combining of these two brought us Hipac Limited; the manufactures of all Farmer’s Choice product lines.
Two years later, a merger with National Foods Limited resulted in expansion of the product portfolio as breaded chicken products such as nuggets, fillets and patties were added to Hipac’s range.
Today all processing operations are located at the Fontabelle location and there are over 180 persons employed.
